1st Birthday = 1st VisitDid you know that all children should have their first visit to a dentist either six months after the first tooth erupts or by their first birthday? Several professional associations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and American Dental Association recommend that children receive their first dental visit before they reach the age of one. The rationale for this advice is to allow the pediatric dentist to create a foundation for preventive education and treatment thus promoting optimal oral health for your child.
This infant exam is quite different than when you may visit your dentist. Your child will remain in your lap facing you and then Dr. McAveeney or Dr. Cheifetz will place your child's head on his knees. The dentist will examine your child's mouth including the teeth, gums, and soft tissue, with a mirror. As pediatric dentists, Dr. McAveeney and Dr. Cheifetz will check for proper oral and facial development as well as detecting early tooth decay. Your child may cry, thuseasing the assessment process because the mouth is wide open. Just as important as the exam, the doctors will discuss issues relating to your child's oral health. These topics may include:
After the exam Dr. McAveeney or Dr. Cheifetz will determine your child's risk assessment for future decay and offer anticipatory guidance tailored to your child's needs. Should your child be in the moderate to high risk categories the doctors may recommend the periodic use of a fluoride varnish. This fluoride, painted over the dentition, has been shown to reduce white-spot lesions which are early indicators of decay. At Amherst Pediatric Dental Associates we feel strongly about the benefits of this exam. Not only are we able to assist families in establishing excellent oral hygiene regimens, we also lay the groundwork for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.
