Did you know that all children
should have their first visit to a dentist either six
months after the first tooth erupts or by their first
birthday?
Several professional
associations including the
American
Academy of
Pediatrics,
American
Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry,
and
American Dental Association recommend that children
receive their first dental visit before they reach the
age of one.
The rationale for this
advice is to allow the pediatric dentist to create a
foundation for preventive education and treatment thus
promoting optimal oral health for your child.
Just as your
child has several well-child visits to the pediatrician
as an infant, creating a dental home early on will
facilitate a future, free from dental decay.
By having your child visit
Dr. McAveeney and Dr. Cheifetz at Amherst Pediatric
Dental Associates before he/she turns one, you have the
opportunity to meet the doctors and staff in a relaxed
non-emergency related situation.
This infant
exam is quite different than when you may visit your
dentist.
Your child will remain in
your lap facing you and then Dr. McAveeney or Dr.
Cheifetz will place your child’s head on their knees.
They will examine your
child’s mouth including their teeth, gums, and soft
tissue with a mirror.
As pediatric dentists, Dr.
McAveeney and Dr. Cheifetz will check for proper oral
and facial development as well as detecting early tooth
decay.
Your child may cry thus
easing the assessment process because the mouth is wide
open.
Just as important as the
exam, the doctors will discuss issues relating to your
child’s oral health.
These topics may include:
·
Fluoride exposure
·
Dietary counseling
·
Bottle/Sippy cup usage
·
Finger/Pacifier habits
·
Teething
·
Injury prevention
·
Home hygiene practices
After the exam
Dr. McAveeney or Dr. Cheifetz will determine your
child’s risk assessment for future decay and offer
anticipatory guidance tailored to your child’s needs.
Should your child be in the
moderate to high risk categories the doctors may
recommend the periodic use of a fluoride varnish.
This fluoride, painted over
the dentition, has been shown to reduce white-spot
lesions which are early indicators of decay.
At Amherst
Pediatric Dental Associates we feel strongly about the
benefits of this exam.
Not only are we able to
assist families in establishing excellent oral hygiene
regimens, we also lay the groundwork for a lifetime of
